Description
The M-theory path integral is expected to provide a microscopic completion of eleven-dimensional supergravity. We argue, without knowing its precise microscopic definition, how the path integral is sensitive to particular choices of background sources. In holographic setups different choices lead to different boundary conditions and ensembles of boundary quantum field theories. Initially we present the general procedure of defining the consistent ensembles and their relations, after which we present several precision tests supporting the proposal.
